Course summary

This course is approximately two hours long, and is designed for mental health practitioners looking to develop core cultural competencies for working with emergency workers. It explores the unique culture and subcultures within emergency services, highlighting the stressors and pressures that often bring emergency workers to therapy. Participants will gain practical insights into incorporating cultural competence into assessment and treatment, helping to refine case formulation and improve therapeutic outcomes.

Access to this self-paced online course is provided for 6 months from the enrolment date.

Course content

By the end of this course, practitioners will be able to:

  • Apply culturally competent practices when working with emergency workers.
  • Identify the core values that shape emergency worker culture.
  • Describe the functions and roles of emergency work agencies in Victoria, including the seven agencies participating in Responder Assist.
  • Analyse the unique stressors and pressures associated with each emergency work agency.
  • Evaluate the barriers and facilitators that influence emergency workers’ engagement in therapy.
  • Integrate core competencies of culturally competent care into case formulation and treatment planning for emergency workers.
