About this course
This 3-hour online course focuses on the use of Psychological First Aid in disaster response and recovery settings. It equips PFA providers with the knowledge and practical skills to support individuals, teams and communities affected by disasters, both in the immediate aftermath and during recovery.
Drawing on the core principles of PFA - safety, calm, efficacy, connectedness and hope - you’ll learn how to use the Prepare, Look, Listen, Link framework to reduce distress, provide practical support, and connect people with appropriate services and community supports. The course also explores the realities and demands of disaster-related work, including how to look after your own wellbeing. Reflection activities, disaster-focused scenarios and a downloadable workbook help you apply what you learn in practice.
Course content
By completing this course you will be able to:
- Explain what trauma is and how the mental health and wellbeing of individuals, teams and communities are impacted following a disaster
- Describe the key principles of Psychological First Aid and their relevance to disaster response and recovery settings
- Apply the Prepare, Look, Listen, Link action principles when working with people impacted by disasters
- Apply the principles of PFA to your own wellbeing.
